How the snow read works

Every badge on this page is computed, not written. On each visit the page pulls the Open-Meteo model analysis for all 48 trailheads in a single request: snow depth on the ground, snowfall over the past three days, and current temperature. Simple thresholds turn those numbers into a read. Under about 2 inches of depth there is nothing to ski. From 2 to 5 inches, groomed corridors with smooth bases may be skiable on rock skis. From 5 to 10 the volunteer systems come alive, past 10 everything skis well, and past 18 the backcountry opens up too. Warm afternoons flag a thaw, hard cold gets a warning, and a big three day total flags a storm cycle where grooming may lag the snowfall.

Model snow depth is a regional signal, not a grooming report. The centers that make snow, Forbush Corner and Cross Country Ski Headquarters, regularly ski when the model shows almost nothing on the ground. Check the operator's own report before a long drive, and put money in the donation box where volunteers groom.

Questions skiers actually ask

When is cross country ski season in northern Michigan?

Most groomed systems run from late December through mid March in a normal winter. The Gaylord and Grayling snowbelt, the Little Traverse hills, and the eastern UP open earliest and hold latest, and Forbush Corner and Cross Country Ski Headquarters make snow, so they often ski when nothing else does.

Which trails are groomed for skate skiing?

Forbush Corner, Hanson Hills, Cross Country Ski Headquarters, the Vasa Pathway, Timber Ridge, Shanty Creek, Crystal Mountain, Big M, The Highlands, Nub's Nob, Black Mountain, and several volunteer systems groom skate lanes. Classic only and backcountry systems are labeled on each card.

Do I need a pass to ski these trails?

It varies. Private and resort centers charge a day pass. Volunteer groomed systems like the Vasa, Big M, and Corsair run on donations, and the donation box genuinely funds the grooming. State parks require the Michigan Recreation Passport for parking, while most state forest pathways are free.

Where is the most reliable snow?

The lake effect belts: Gaylord and the 45th parallel corridor, the hills from Boyne through Harbor Springs, the Udell Hills near Big M, and the eastern UP. The northeast Lower gets less lake effect but holds cold well, so Black Mountain and Corsair ski well in colder winters.

How accurate is the live snow data?

Snow depth and new snowfall come from the Open-Meteo weather model analysis for each trailhead, refreshed on every page load. Model snow depth is a solid regional signal but it is not a grooming report, so check the operator's own report before a long drive.
